Business owners reject a funding call because of need, cost, trust, timing or another lender most of the time. Your task during the call is not to argue. Simply name the concern, ask one useful question and give them a simple next step.
Never guess a rate, promise approval or say there is no personal guarantee. If you run a funding shop, work as an ISO manager or sell as a broker, use these replies when you call business owners for funding.
In this session, we are going to break down the sales objections when generating business loan leads. This piece is super compact and written by our industry specialists who have worked in business funding for a long time.
What Objections Do Business Owners Raise on Funding Calls?
You will usually hear objections about need, rates, terms, recent funding, other lenders, trust, documents or timing. Spot the type first so you can answer the real concern instead of pushing the same pitch.

SBA means U.S. Small Business Administration. It backs loans made by banks and other lenders. According to Gong data, analyzing more than 300 million cold calls, five objections made up 74% of all pushback. Our (CallingAgency) in-house research on cold calling objection statistics shows wider numbers.
What Can a Funding Rep Say on the Call?
You can ask questions, explain the process and book the next step. You should not make up funding terms that only the funder can confirm.
| Topic | Say this | Never say |
| Cost | The written offer shows the full cost | Any made-up rate or factor rate |
| Approval | The funder decides after review | You are approved |
| Speed | The funder can explain the timing | Money in 24 hours, guaranteed |
| Guarantees | The terms explain any guarantee | No personal guarantee needed |
| Liens | The terms say if a UCC lien applies | We never file a lien |
| Fees | Any fees appear in the written offer | There are no fees |
| Credit | The funder explains its credit review | This will not affect your credit |
The FTC has acted against MCA companies over misleading claims about guarantees, fees, credit impact and pre-approval. It also banned RCG Advances from the MCA industry after false guarantee claims. State-specific rules and regulations are also very important. So, check state-specific rules before making calls.
What Do You Say When the Owner Says “I Don’t Need Funding”?
Agree first, then ask what could create a need later. You are trying to learn the timing, not force a need that does not exist.
Script: Fair enough. What could change that for you, a slow season, a large order or new equipment?
If they name a future need, ask when it usually happens and get permission to check back before then. If nothing would change, thank them and end the call. An early “I don’t need it” may also be a reflex.
How Do You Answer “Your Rates Are Too High” Without Quoting a Rate?
Tell them the funder gives the exact cost in writing. Then ask what rate or offer they are comparing you with.
Script: I hear you. The funder gives the full cost in writing. What were you quoted before?
Do not give a ballpark just to keep the call moving. The owner may remember your number as a promise even if the written offer later shows something different.
How Do You Answer Questions About Payments, Guarantees, Liens and Amounts?
Let the funder confirm these terms in the written offer. You can ask questions, but do not guess a payment, guarantee, lien or funding amount.
The Daily Payments Are Too Much
Ask what payment schedule would work for the business.
Script: I hear you. What payment schedule would work better for your cash flow?
You learn what the owner can handle without defending a schedule you did not set.
I Won’t Sign a Personal Guarantee
Tell them the written terms will show whether a personal guarantee applies.
Script: Fair concern. The funder’s terms will spell that out so you can review it before you decide.
Do not promise that a guarantee is not required.
I Don’t Want a Lien on My Business
Tell them the offer will show whether the funder files a Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) lien.
Script: Good question. The written terms will tell you if a UCC lien applies.
You should ot guess or commit about the things you can make happen.
Just Tell Me How Much I Qualify For
Tell them the funder sets the amount after review.
Script: Only the funder can set the amount after review. Want me to set up a short call?
A number from you can sound like approval, so keep the answer simple.
What Do You Say When the Owner Just Got Funded or Already Has a Lender?
Ask about their current funding and find a useful time to follow up. Do not rush into another deal.
I Just Got Funded
For the objection “I just got funded,” you can ask about how their funding is going and when a follow-up can be effective.
Script: Congratulations on getting your fund. When is the best time for me to follow up again for further approach?
If your prospect says that they have stacked advances or took funding from multiple lenders, then note what they say.
I Already Have a Lender
The best answer to handle this objection is asking about the current lender’s shortcomings and what their current lender could do better.
Script: Good to hear. What do you like about them, and what would you change next time?
Do not attack their current lender. You want to learn what matters when the owner looks at funding again.
What Do You Say When the Owner Wants a Bank or SBA Loan?
Admit that the bank or SBA loan will be a good fit for them. Then ask if they have already applied for it or not. Don’t try to prove them wrong if they feel good about an SBA or bank loan.
The same idea works with other competition and alternative objections. So understand the current choice before you explain another one.
I Will Just Go to My Bank
Ask if they have already applied and offer to check back later.
Script: Makes sense. Have you applied with them yet? If it does not work out, can I check back next month?
Never predict that the bank will reject them.
SBA Loans Are Cheaper
Do not fight over cost. Ask about the owner’s timing and application.
Script: It could be the right fit. How soon do you need the money, and have you started the SBA application?
Let the lender confirm SBA rates, timing and terms.
How Do You Handle “Is This a Scam?” and “How Did You Get My Number?”
Tell the owner who you are, who you call for and where you got the number. Never make up a company, funder or source.
Script: Fair question. I am {{agent name}} with {{company}}, calling for {{funder}}. Your business came from {{true source}}.
If the source was a public UCC filing, then say that and don’t say the owner completed a form. You can when your records show they did not. These are normal on an unexpected call, so handling trust and skepticism objections covers more ways to answer without getting defensive.
Are You a Broker or a Direct Funder?
Answer truthfully. If you are a broker, say so and name the funder when you can.
Script: I am with {{company}}, and we work with {{funder}}. The funder makes the funding decision.
Never call yourself a direct lender if you are not one.
I Got Burned by a Funder Before
Ask what happened and let the owner explain the concern.
Script: I’m sorry to hear that. What happened?
Listen before you answer. Then point them to the written terms that cover the issue they raised. Do not attack the other funder.
What Do You Say About Bank Statements and Credit Worries?
Do not ask for bank statements on the first cold call or promise what will happen with credit. Let the funder review those items if the owner chooses to apply.
Your first call should focus on fit and intent. That is the same goal behind lead qualification services. Confirm whether the prospect is worth moving to the next step before asking for deeper information.
I’m Not Sending You My Statements
Tell them there is nothing to send on the first call.
Script: No need to send statements today. If you apply, you can send them to the funder.
That keeps the first conversation simple and lowers the trust barrier.
My Credit Isn’t Good Enough
Tell them credit needs depend on the product and funder.
Script: Credit needs can differ by product and funder. Want a short call with them to go over it?
Never promise “no credit check” or say credit will not be affected.
What Do You Say When the Owner Stalls?
A stall during a cold call is not directly a NO, so ask one question to find the real concern. Also remember, you should not run behind someone who keeps avoiding your conversation.
Just Send Me an Email
Agree, then ask what would make the email useful.
Script: Happy to. What should I cover so it is worth opening?
Then set a callback day if they are open to it. Handling the “just send me an email” objection properly will give you more ways to turn that request into a real next step.
Let Me Think About It
Ask what they want to think through. Their answer tells you whether the issue is cost, timing, trust or something else.
Script: Sure. What would you want to check first?
If there is a real concern, answer it and set a follow-up time. You can also use these approaches for handling “let me think about it” without pushing for an instant yes.
I Need to Ask My Partner
Offer a short call with both people instead of asking the owner to repeat your pitch.
Script: Of course. Would a quick call with both of you make it easier?
If they agree, book a time before you hang up.
I’m Too Busy Right Now
Respect the timing and ask for a better slot.
Script: Understood. When is a better time this week?
Repeat the day and time so both sides know when the next call will happen.
When Should a Funding Rep Stop the Call?
Stop after you have handled up to two real objections and the owner still declines. A “stop calling” request is different, stop the pitch right away.
CallingAgency recommends this simple limit:
- Answer the first objection with one question.
- Answer the second with one small next step.
- End politely if the owner declines both.
Gong data puts the median successful cold call at about 4.8 minutes, which gives you room to handle pushback without turning the call into an argument.
“Stop Calling” Is Not an Objection
Do not rebut a removal request. Confirm it and log it.
Script: Understood. I will take your number off our list.
Federal and state rules can differ based on the type of number, call and relationship. Build your process around the rules that apply to your campaign.
